Discussion: Bacteria as cancer treatment

Loading image…

Ive been out of Node 8, so I havent been able to work. However, one of my colleagues sent me this article… there are a few scientists here on iM. What do we think? #SciM

Edit: Ive embedded a link that should give access to a free PDF. Let me know if it doesnt work.

Supplying a link to the free full text could be good.

@slaughteredvomitdollSyd Are links allowed on iM?

Chen, N., Yang, Z., & Arpaia, N. (2026). Bacterial engineering for cancer therapy. Nature Cancer, 1–10. https://doi.org/10.1038/s43018-026-01171-w

@miracleworkerAdamas Well, theres literally a link embed field in the post editor. (Although I just searched and it seems to actually be paywalled, so Im not sure if supplying THAT would be allowed…)

Syd
Syd[Roleplayer]

@miracleworkerAdamas Oh, the doi is still definitely helpful though. Ill look at this when I get the chance. (So sleepy…)

Finally got the hell out of bed and was able to look at this. I don't know anything about cancer therapies, but this is pretty cool.

GRRR STUPID PAYWALL (๑•̀ᗝ•́)૭ SCIENCE SHOULD BE FREE!!!!!!

read the paper ^^ seems cool!!!! wonder how it can keep targeting tumors without da bacteria??? crazy

Adamas
Adamas[Roleplayer]

@leucinelucy Science should be free. For-profit journals are a plague.

@leucinelucy The paper mentions the possibility of activating the immune system from bacterial payloads or simply activating antitumor immune response by killing tumor cells, which would lead to prolonged antitumoral response and the possibility of immune memory.

@slaughteredvomitdollSyd I thought the microbiology and immunology aspects were the most interesting. Whats your field of study?

Overall the paper reviews some promising preliminary results and outlines exciting possibilities that are not very close to being therapeutically available (as is typical for experimental cancer treatments). I would be interested in seeing if either of you come across a paper you want to discuss.

@miracleworkerAdamas Finally we agree on something. Paywalled papers make me sick. I cant help but to notice that this was published in Nature, although I suppose thats typical for a flashy paper about an experimental treatment.

I study neuroscience, currently Im doing clinical research on an experimental treatment (lol) for neurodegenerative disorders involving manipulation of the cyTus chip. Honestly, its about time we harnessed the fact that theres literally a chip in all of our brains to do something good in the field of medicine.

Adamas
Adamas[Roleplayer]

@slaughteredvomitdollSyd That sounds like an interesting project. Are you working on VR-PTSD at all?

Syd
Syd[Roleplayer]

@miracleworkerAdamas No, Alzheimers. VR-PTSD isnt neurodegenerative lol

Adamas
Adamas[Roleplayer]

@slaughteredvomitdollSyd I see. Though I wouldnt be surprised if some of the findings are transferable. Isnt it damage in the brain either way?

Syd
Syd[Roleplayer]

@miracleworkerAdamas Perhaps, although the mechanism of VR-PTSD is still completely unknown.

Adamas
Adamas[Roleplayer]

@slaughteredvomitdollSyd Im aware. Perhaps in the future.

@miracleworkerAdamas circular feedback loop type of thing maybe :3

@slaughteredvomitdollSyd WOWOWOWOW!!!! my grandpa had alzheimer's!!!!!! tanks for researching it ദ്ദി/ᐠ。‸。ᐟ\

@leucinelucy Sorry to hear, I do hope my research can help the world in that respect <3

@slaughteredvomitdollSyd isokay!!!! ur helping the world!!!!!!

@leucinelucy Unfortunately, more like a single response. Increased immune activity will clear out bacteria colonizing the tumor as well.

@leucinelucy Hold on. I can DM you a longer explanation, if youd like.
