[Journal Club] Searching for life's conditions through diversity theory

Loading image…

I'm liking the journal club idea, so I decided to go find an article that's a bit more accessible than the paper my colleague posted earlier. Don't be scared to read and discuss, even if you're not a scientist by trade ૮꒰ྀི∩´ ᵕ `∩꒱ྀིა

Also, we need a tag for our journal club! How about #YeahScience :)

Edit: #SciM will be the hashtag!

@miracleworkerAdamas You need to go back and tag your initial post #YeahScience now.

@slaughteredvomitdollSyd Absolutely not.

@miracleworkerAdamas C'monnn you have to! The princess decrees it!

@slaughteredvomitdollSyd Youre not a princess and I dont have to listen to you. This tag trivializes complex or controversial findings. What about something simple like #iMJournalClub instead?

Syd

@miracleworkerAdamas But that's soooooo boring! Why would my statement "trivialize" anything? If anything, it'll encourage more users to join in and get excited about science~ Or do you want to gatekeep that?

im just a sheep but why wouldnt you use #STEMiM or #SciM or something like that? Ꮚ˙ꈊ˙Ꮚ

@ramtabootino Wait, I actually like those... #SciM is fun!

Thoughts on the article itself: its a very basic introduction to biomolecule chemistry. I dont know anything about xenobiology or planetary science, so it was interesting to see that perspective on my field. I would like to see an astrobiological take on nucleic acid diversity.

@miracleworkerAdamas I suppose looking for such a crucial molecule to life is the next step, huh?

For what it's worth, this article has a lot of limitations. Despite the site's policy of "no clickbait", this particular topic feels very easy to oversell. I myself had to retype the title of my post several times to make sure I wasn't making it sound like "Wow, they found life in space!!1!1!". This is merely an explanation of a technique that might possibly be used to find evidence of the complex amino acids typical of life.

I linked this article partially because of what you said—in hopes it would offer a different perspective of your field. I thought you might find it interesting.
